One Direction Funny Moments Compilation 5
A quick introduction on what I hope to create and cultivate here and some pictures to get to know me :)
Music and fandom’s have played a part in my life for a long time. While I was growing up my father played the drums at church and it was in elementary school that I was in the school band and played the the tenor saxophone. It was also in elementary school that I discovered the joys of the Internet, particularly YouTube and social media.
Through YouTube I discovered and fell in love with artists I still to this day obsess over. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, 5 Seconds of Summer, and most importantly One Direction. My discovery of the band led to countless nights of scrolling on 1D Tumblr and watching videos with titles like “One Direction Funny Moments Compilation 5”. This love for the five boys still follows me to this day, so much so that I even have a Harry Styles tattoo that covers up my entire right forearm.
This love and passion for fandom, especially live music and the community that it creates is a big reason why I even started writing in the first place. I’ve always loved writing and went to get my BA in Creative Writing from Fresno State (not to toot my own horn but I graduated Summa Cum Laude). It’s been through writing and analyzing my favorite artists and concerts that I’ve been able to tap into my adolescence. Gone are the days of staying up past my bedtime listening to Made in the A.M. Gone are the days of reading Larry fan-fiction (I was young and queer and needed representation I’m sorry). Lastly gone are the days of screaming and crying over a band who doesn’t even know I exist.
Or maybe it doesn’t have to be. Maybe I can still have that same level of obsession over bands and artists I’ve loved for more than half my life. And honestly what’s wrong with that? What’s wrong with going back to a time in my life where I was truly carefree and not bogged down by the woes of adult life?
This is what I hope to achieve with Live and in Colored. Create a space and platform where I can reflect and go back to my obsessive fanboy phase from ten years ago. This time though put a focus on how race and in particular being Black in these mostly white fandoms shaped me (positively and sometimes negatively) into the overzealous fan that I am today.
Lastly, I want to show that it’s not a phase, mom.
